25 Iconic Moments In Premier League History

24/08/2017

back to blog

With the 2017-18 season of the Premier League underway, this campaign marks the 25th anniversary of one of the greatest competitions in world football. In the 25 years since its inaugural year of 1992-93, there has certainly been no shortage of talking points and magical moments.

To celebrate these magical 25 years, here at BadRhino we’ve put together a quiz containing the 25 most iconic goals, fouls and WTF moments in Premier League history.

Check it out… bet you can’t name every one! (You’ll find the answers at the bottom of the page – no cheating!)

25 moments in Premier League history

With only enough room for 25 iconic Premier League moments, we’ve picked out 5 moments that aren’t included that deserve an honourable mention:

1) “Aguerooooo”

Aguero injury time winner vs QPR

In the 94th minute of the 38th and final game of the 2011-12 Premier League season, Sergio Aguero scored to complete an injury time comeback which earned Manchester City their first Premier League title – snatching it from under the nose of their city rivals Manchester United on goal difference. The scenes that followed alongside Martin Tyler’s commentary makes this one of the most iconic Premier League moments ever.

2) Vardy Breaks Consecutive Game Goal Scoring Record

Arguably any moment of Leicester’s fairy-tale 2015-16 season could be featured, but one that epitomises their season is the moment Jamie Vardy scored in his 11th consecutive game to break the record previously held by Ruud Van Nistolrooy. What makes it so remarkable is that just 5 years previously Vardy had been playing non-league football – a real rags to riches story.

3) Teammates Kieron Dyer & Lee Bowyer’s on Pitch Scuffle

Next, a bizarre but iconic Premier League moment comes courtesy of Kieron Dyer and Lee Bowyer. The Newcastle United teammates came to blows in the middle of a game against Aston Villa in April 2005, leaving them both red carded and no doubt red faced. They later put their scuffle down to the “will to win”.

4) Adebayor’s Celebration vs Arsenal

When Emmanuel Adebayor left Arsenal for Manchester City in the summer of 2009, it left a sour taste in Arsenal fans mouths. But when the two sides met at the Etihad Stadium in September 2009, Adebayor made sure there were fireworks. After scoring the third goal in his sides 3-0 win, he ran the length of the pitch to knee slide and celebrate in front of the travelling and understandably furious Arsenal fans.

5) Rooney’s Boxing Celebration

After a video had surfaced of him being knocked out by his friend and former teammate Phil Bardsley, the press were all over Wayne Rooney in the build up to Manchester United’s game vs Tottenham in March 2015. Rooney responded in the best possible fashion – scoring in his team’s 3-0 win and subsequently celebrating by throwing a few punches and pretending to get knocked out.

Here’s to another 25 Premier League years filled with similarly spectacular moments.
